Terms of use and subscription

1. Who we are

echo is developed and sold by Make Algo SL, Tax ID (NIF) B88875018, Calle General Pardiñas, 114 — 28006 Madrid, Spain. You can write to us at hola@make-algo.com for anything: questions, cancellations, complaints or exercising your rights.

These terms govern downloading and using echo and, if you subscribe, the subscription. By installing echo you accept sections 8 to 13; by subscribing you also accept sections 4 to 7.

2. What echo is and what you need to use it

echo is a voice dictation app for macOS: you hold a key, speak, release it and the text appears written in the app you were in.

You need macOS 14 or later on a Mac with Apple Silicon, microphone and accessibility permissions, and about 600 MB of disk space for the recognition model, which is downloaded the first time.

AI polishing is optional and requires your own paid subscription to Claude (Anthropic) or ChatGPT (OpenAI), with its command-line application installed and signed in. We do not sell, include or broker those subscriptions. Without either of them, echo still works: it transcribes on your Mac and applies the voice punctuation commands.

3. What leaves your Mac and what doesn't

  • Your voice never leaves. Recognition runs entirely on your Mac.
  • If you turn on polishing, the transcribed text does leave. echo runs on your Mac the official Anthropic or OpenAI application, which sends that text with your own account, just as if you had pasted it into their chat yourself. We don't see it, receive it or store it. That transfer is governed by Anthropic's or OpenAI's terms and privacy policy, not by these.
  • That use consumes your subscription quota with them. If you dictate a lot, it shows. We can't guarantee their quota will be enough for you, because it isn't ours.
  • Towards us, the only things that leave are an identifier of your Mac and, if you subscribe, your email address. The details are in the privacy policy.
  • If you'd rather nothing leaves, turn polishing off in Settings.

4. The 14-day trial

echo works in full for 14 days, free and without a card, counted from the first time you open it on each Mac. Once that period ends, a subscription is needed to keep dictating. Reinstalling does not restart the trial.

5. Price, payment and renewal

  • The subscription comes in two options, your choice: €3 a month or €12 a year, VAT included in both. Either of them covers up to three Macs of yours; the only difference is the period and the price.
  • Payment is processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
  • The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period —every month or every year, depending on the option— at the same price, unless you cancel before. If we are going to raise the price, we will let you know by email at least 30 days in advance; if it doesn't suit you, cancel before the renewal.
  • You can switch options at any time —monthly to yearly or the other way round— from Settings › Licence, which takes you to the Stripe portal. The change is applied pro rata: the part of the period you have already paid for and not used is deducted from the new price.
  • You can cancel at any time, without giving a reason, from the same portal. When you cancel, echo keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for; there is no penalty and no minimum term.
  • If a charge fails, we will let you know and try again. If it still can't be charged, the subscription is suspended.

6. Right of withdrawal

If you are a consumer, you have the right to withdraw from the contract within 14 calendar days without giving any reason.

However: so that you can use echo as soon as you pay, when you subscribe we ask you to expressly consent to us starting to provide the service immediately and to acknowledge that, as a result, you lose the right of withdrawal once the service has been performed (Article 103(m) of the consolidated text of the Spanish General Consumer and User Protection Act). If you don't accept this, we can't activate your licence right away.

Regardless of the above, we give you our own money-back guarantee: if echo doesn't win you over, write to hola@make-algo.com within 14 days of your first charge with an amount —the first one in which you actually pay something; if your first charge was €0 because of a discount, the first real one counts— and we refund it in full, no questions asked. The guarantee covers only that first charge: renewals are not refunded, but you can cancel at any time and echo keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for. We think that's fair, because you had 14 days of trial to decide beforehand.

7. Referral programme

If you have an active echo subscription taken out through Stripe, you can invite other people with your own code, created from Settings › Invite a friend.

  • What your invitee gets: a €3 discount on their first charge. If they choose the monthly option, their first month is free.
  • What you get: €3 of credit in your Stripe customer account for each invitee who goes on to pay. The credit is automatically deducted from your next invoices and accumulates.
  • When it is credited: 14 days after your invitee's first charge with an amount, provided that charge has not been refunded. This matches their money-back guarantee under §6: the reward is credited once the payment is final.
  • Cap: at most 12 rewarded invitations per calendar year per person.

Programme rules:

  • The credit has no cash value. It only works as a discount on echo invoices: it can't be exchanged for cash, transferred or assigned to someone else. If your subscription ends, any unused credit is lost.
  • The code is for inviting other people. Self-referral —using your own code, or inviting yourself with another email address, another machine of yours or the same card— voids the reward, and we may also void rewards obtained through any other fraudulent or abusive use of the programme and exclude whoever does it from it.
  • We may modify or end the programme, announcing it on the website and in the app at least 15 days in advance. Ending it doesn't affect what you have already earned: you keep the credit already credited and the rewards for invitees who had already made their first charge with an amount before that date.

8. Your licence

We don't sell you the software: we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence to install and use echo on up to three Macs under your control, for personal or professional purposes, as long as you comply with these terms.

You may not: resell, rent, lend, sublicense or distribute echo; remove or alter authorship notices; circumvent the licence check; or use echo to provide a dictation service to third parties who are not users of their own copies.

You may, because the law grants it to you: make a backup copy and carry out the operations permitted by Article 100 of the consolidated text of the Spanish Intellectual Property Act, including decompilation to achieve interoperability. Nothing in this section limits those rights.

9. Third-party software and trademarks

echo incorporates FluidAudio, licensed under Apache 2.0, and uses NVIDIA's Parakeet TDT 0.6b v3 recognition model, licensed under CC-BY-4.0. The text of both licences is in Settings › About › Licences.

The Claude Code and Codex command-line applications belong to Anthropic and OpenAI respectively, are not distributed with echo and are governed by their own terms. echo is not sponsored, endorsed by or affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI, NVIDIA or Apple; their trademarks are mentioned only to describe what echo works with.

10. Updates

echo periodically checks whether there is a new version and may install it. While your subscription is active we will provide the updates needed to keep echo in conformity with the contract, including security updates. You can turn off automatic installation in Settings; if you do and don't install the updates we offer you, we are not liable for any lack of conformity that is due solely to that.

11. If Anthropic or OpenAI change the rules

Polishing depends on third-party services we don't control. They may change their terms, prices or availability, or stop allowing this use.

If that happens, we may replace the polishing provider with an equivalent one without it being considered a breach, notifying you by email. If none remained available, echo would keep working with local transcription and voice commands; if you consider that this amounts to a lack of conformity with what you subscribed to, you may terminate the subscription and we will refund the unused proportion.

12. Legal guarantee of conformity

We are liable to you for any lack of conformity of echo throughout the term of your subscription, in accordance with Articles 115 et seq. of the consolidated text of the Spanish General Consumer and User Protection Act. Nothing in these terms limits, excludes or conditions that guarantee. If echo doesn't do what we say it does, write to hola@make-algo.com.

13. Liability

We are liable for the foreseeable damages we cause you by breaching these terms.

We do not exclude or limit in any case our liability for wilful misconduct, gross negligence, death or personal injury, or any other liability that the law does not allow to be limited.

Two common-sense warnings, because they describe how echo works:

  • echo pastes text into the app you are writing in. Check what appears before sending it. We are not responsible for the use you make of the text or for where it ends up.
  • echo is not suitable for information covered by professional secrecy if you use polishing, because the text goes out to Anthropic or OpenAI. For those cases, turn polishing off.

14. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your licence if the subscription is not paid or if you use echo in a way that breaches these terms or the law. We will notify you beforehand and give you a reasonable period to put it right, unless the breach is serious or urgent. You can terminate whenever you like by cancelling the subscription and uninstalling echo.

15. Changes to these terms

We may modify them for legal, technical or service-operation reasons. We will notify you by email at least 30 days in advance. If the changes don't suit you, you can cancel before they take effect and we will refund the unused proportion.

17. Applicable law and complaints

These terms are governed by Spanish law. If you are a consumer, you keep the right to bring claims before the courts of your own place of residence, and the consumer protection laws of your country of residence in the European Union continue to protect you.
